Gold Coast Universities Student Exchange
There are a number of universities located on the Gold Coast, including Bond University, Griffith University and Southern Cross University. And one thing the Gold Coast universities do very well, is student exchange programs.
A student exchange program is where students from other universities, Australian or International, spend a semester studying on the Gold Coast as part of their degree.
One thing is constant though. If you are a student coming to the Gold Coast, the chances are you are going to surf. There is nothing mysterious about this. We have some of the best surf breaks in the world here. The water is warm all year round. There is nowhere better in the world to enjoy a few months of surfing, no matter what your competency is.
A problem we have found is when students arrive on the Gold Coast, they find it very difficult to find a surfboard for their stay at a price which is reasonable. If you have your own surfboard, one thing you'll find also is that the airlines are making it very difficult and expensive for you to bring your board as baggage. This will leave you with a dilemma. You are spending 3 months at one of the worlds best surfing playgrounds, yet its nigh on impossible to get a board at a reasonable price. So what do you do?
Most students on arrival will scramble to the surf shops, trying to buy a second hand surfboard with the intention of selling it back to the shops at the end of semester. There are 2 problems with this.
- You are competing with about 1000 other students with the same idea, for the dozen or so second hand boards on offer
- The surf shops know this and exploit it as far as they can
So you will end up paying $350 - $1000 for your board maybe second hand, probably new. At the end of semester, when trying to sell your board back to the surf shop, given there are so many students all doing the same thing, you will be lucky to get $50 back. Why would the surf shops buy your surfboard back when the next lot of students can be convinced to buy a new one?
At Gold Coast Surfboards, we do not like this practise, we do not think it is fair.
